Sudoku

A lot of people look at a Sudoku grid and assume it is full of complicated math. The truth is, there is zero math involved. Sudoku is a pure logic puzzle where numbers are just symbols you use to find patterns and eliminate possibilities.

You can play classic Sudoku right in your browser for free. It is clean, simple to play on a laptop, Chromebook, or phone, and gives you a calm, satisfying way to reset your focus between study sessions or classes.

What is Sudoku?

Sudoku is a famous number-placement puzzle played on a nine-by-nine grid. The large board is divided into nine smaller three-by-three boxes.

When you start a new puzzle, some squares already have numbers filled in as clues. Your job is to fill in the remaining empty spaces until every single cell has the right number. Because there is only one correct solution for every valid puzzle, every number you place brings you closer to cracking the entire board.

The Basic Rules of the Game

The rules are quick to remember because they are the same across the whole board. You must place numbers from 1 to 9 in the empty squares following three simple conditions:

Every horizontal row must contain all numbers from 1 to 9 without repeating. Every vertical column must also contain all numbers from 1 to 9 without repeating. Finally, each of the nine three-by-three smaller boxes must contain the numbers 1 to 9 with no duplicates. If a number is already in a specific row, column, or box, you know for sure it cannot go there again.

Easy Tips to Solve Puzzles Faster

The fastest way to get rolling on a fresh puzzle is a technique called cross-hatching. Pick a single number, like 1 or 5, and trace where it already appears in nearby rows and columns. By seeing which lanes are already blocked by that number, you can usually spot empty squares in a three-by-three box where that number has to go.

When you run into trickier spots, use the pencil notes feature. Jotting down tiny candidate numbers inside empty boxes lets you keep track of possibilities without cluttering the board. The moment a square is narrowed down to only one possible number, you can lock it in and immediately check how that placement unlocks neighboring rows and columns.

Pick Your Level: From Quick Warm-Ups to Expert

You can choose the difficulty that matches how much time you have. If you only have a five-minute break, Easy gives you plenty of starting clues so you can breeze through the grid and enjoy a quick win.

If you want a real logic workout, Medium and Hard boards give you fewer starting numbers, forcing you to think multiple moves ahead and look for hidden pairs. There is no ticking timer to stress you out, so you can solve at your own pace.

A Calming Way to Reset Your Mind

Sudoku is one of the best games to play when you want to take a break from scrolling social media and give your brain something calm and constructive to focus on. It clears away mental clutter, improves concentration, and gives you that awesome feeling of accomplishment when that final number clicks into place.
