Testing your reflexes is simple, precise, and takes less than a minute:

What is Reaction Time and Why Does It Matter?

Reaction time (RT) is the duration it takes for your sensory receptors to detect a stimulus, transmit signals through the nervous system to the brain, and trigger a motor response in your muscles.

In neuroscience, reaction speed is typically broken down into three categories:

  • Simple Reaction Time: Reacting to a single, predetermined stimulus with a single action (e.g., this test or a sprinter responding to a starting gun).

  • Recognition Reaction Time: Identifying a specific cue among distractors before responding.

  • Age: Reflexes peak in the late teens to mid-20s and gradually decline with age, though routine brain and reflex training significantly slows this decline.

  • Hydration and Nutrition: Dehydration and blood sugar crashes slow neurotransmitter signaling.

  • Focus and Distractions: Divided attention or high stress directly adds milliseconds to your latency.
